The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey

The 7 Habits of Common Sense. 7️⃣🤦‍♂️

I find it baffling that this book has become such a widely celebrated self-help classic. Are there really that many dysfunctional people in the world that something this basic is hailed as life-changing?

The so-called "habits" aren’t really habits of effectiveness at all; they’re just common-sense principles of being a decent human being. Most of them are things an average person is already doing day-to-day, likely without even noticing. For that reason, the book feels less like guidance and more like a redundant reminder of the obvious.

If you’re a competently sane adult, you probably won’t gain much from this. At best, it’s a rephrasing of what you already know. At worst, it’s an overhyped self-help manual that offers little beyond the basics of normal behavior.

  1. Be Proactive: Focus on what you can control and choose your responses instead of reacting automatically.

  2. Begin with the End in Mind: Start everything with a clear vision of the outcome you want to achieve.

  3. Put First Things First: Focus your time and energy on tackling the most urgent tasks before anything else.

  4. Think Win-Win: Approach situations with a mindset that seeks mutual benefit, where everyone can succeed.

  5. Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood: Listen with genuine intent to understand others before expressing your own perspective.

  6. Synergize: Combine strengths through teamwork and open collaboration to create results greater than what anyone could achieve alone.

  7. Sharpen the Saw: Don’t neglect yourself, take time to relax and recharge so you don’t burn out when it matters most.
